The Cumberland River is located southern central portion of Kentucky. The fishery is managed by the Kentucky Dept of Fish and Wildlife Resources and the water flows and release schedule is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This is the largest tail water trout river east of the Mississippi with over 60 miles of trout water. The Cumberland is a beast of a river where water flows can vary from week to week and sometimes daily. The Cumberland Lake tailwater provides some of the best Rainbow and Brown Trout fishing in the southeastern United States . Beginning at Wolf Creek Dam, the Cumberland River supports over 60 miles of trout fishing, producing average size trout of around 14″ and many daily trophies ranging from 18″ to 20″ and larger.

When the water flows allow there is no place I would rather be fishing. The Cumberland is probably the best river on the eastern side of the county for producing larger quality trout on a regular basis. We usually start fishing on the Cumberland in May and will continue on through November and December. Again our fishing schedule for the Cumberland is based of the water release schedule and sometimes the scheduled releases for the river are just to high for good fishing conditions.

Hiwassee River Guides uses both river jets and drift boats on the Cumberland River. By using river jets to fish the Cumberland we have the ability to fish more miles of river than the majority of outfitters that operate here. If the water is ultra low at a zero flow we can still fish the skinny shallows and range further on the river where the boat ramps are just to spread out for drift boat fishing. Everything here is based on water flows, so we use the most appropriate boats for the given conditions on any given day.  If you would like to book a day of fishing on the Cumberland or need any further information, feel free to give us a call and we will be glad to help.

All of our Cumberland River Guides are Licensed U.S.C.G. Captains and Kentucky State Licensed Guides.
